Solid Made for TV Film

Despite being made for television this samurai adventure has a lot going for it, not least is star Nakadai Tetsuya, an actor who I'll watch read the phone book. The story is familiar and had already been filmed once before as loyal retainers must seek revenge against a well-connected Lord who assaulted the daughter-in-law and murdered the son of a daimyo while passing through their territory on the way to Edo.

Director Takuji Tominaga doesn't stretch any cinematic territory here and the confines of the TV screen don't do it any favors either but the story is well told and action sequences are exciting. Parallels with Seven Samurai abound and it's fun picking them out. Overall worth seeing.
